Chapter 5: Company Property
"Is he still there?" I said into the phone.
"He's in his office with the door open," Pip said. "Feet on the desk. He's eating our pizza."
"Who else is there?"
"Half the studio. Nobody wanted to go home after lunch. We've been sitting here drinking warm beer and updating our résumés."
"Don't let him leave."
I hung up.
Leon was already on his feet.
"Lyle sent my folder to Halvern," I said.
"I heard."
"All of it. My drafts. My files."
"I heard, Della."
I walked out of the old man's office and down the length of the dark floor.
I heard him follow me. He didn't try to stop me.
The studio was the only lit room on thirty-one.
Seven of us were in there. Pip at the lettering table. Two artists on the floor with their backs to the flat files. The junior writer, still red-eyed. Beer bottles and pizza boxes everywhere.
Lyle's glass office opened off the far side.
He had his feet up and a slice in his hand, exactly like Pip said.
He saw me coming and didn't take his feet down.
"Della. Long day."
"You sent my folder to Halvern."
"I sent the company's folder to the company's buyer."
"It's mine."
"It's on Winship's server, made on Winship's time, on Winship's computers. It's company property." He took a bite. "And the company's being sold. So it's their property too. Basically."
The studio had gone silent behind me.
"You put your name on my cards."
"I put the company's best line in front of its new owner. You're welcome."
"Sixteen cards, Lyle. Tell me one thing about any of them."
"I don't have to."
"Tell me what card six is."
He smiled. "You're tired. Go home."
