Chapter 15: What Tiernan Sold

The shed door scraped behind me.

Tiernan stood on the threshold with a paper bag from the diner in one hand and the snow melting in his hair.

He looked at me, and then at the bare rack, and he did not pretend.

"You counted it," he said.

"Nineteen thousand dollars came under my door."

"I wanted it anonymous."

"You wanted it anonymous because you knew I'd throw it back."

"I knew you'd make it a debt."

"It is a debt!"

My voice cracked off the tin roof.

"You sold the only things you own that you made yourself, Tiernan."

"You sold them to a salvage yard in Rockland, and you didn't ask me, and then you let me carry it into that building like it was the fleet's."

"Your father spent a month deciding things about me in rooms I wasn't in."

"Don't you dare do it to me out of love."

He set the diner bag down on the bench, very carefully.

"That's fair," he said.

"Don't say fair, say something."

"I'm not sorry about the money."

"Tiernan."

"I'm sorry I didn't tell you."

"I'd do the first part again."

"The tools can be made again, and your father's pilings can't."

"I don't want your pilings!"

"Then what do you want?"

"I want you to stop paying for the silence," I said.

He went still.

"What?"

"You've been paying for it since September."

"You sold your chisels because you've been holding it in your chest for three months, and it has to go somewhere."

For a moment the only sound was the wind testing the tin.

Then he sat down on the upturned crate in the shavings and put his scarred palm over his eyes.

"I held your phone," he said.

"It was on this bench, face up, and it lit."

"I saw what it said."

"I knew the wharf."

"I'd seen it from the water my whole life, from my father's launch, with a number written next to it in the Trust's books."
