On Friday we started calling the names.
The unit with Margot's face stood by the table and read them in a clear, even voice.
She gave an age and a town for each, and Dot dialed.
"Thirty-four, Salem."
"Voicemail."
"Twenty-six, Beaverton."
"Disconnected."
"Forty-one, Gresham."
Dot said, "Hello, my name is Dot, I'm calling about a photo, please don't hang up," and the line went dead.
By noon we had made forty calls and reached nine people.
Three of them had hung up on us, two had called us scammers, and one had laughed for a full minute.
Margot sat at the end of the table with a pad and wrote down every word.
She did not speak unless we asked.
At two o'clock a woman in a yellow raincoat picked up and listened to the whole speech without a sound.
