She came by bus.
I watched her from the window at six, walking up the street in my grey coat with a paper bag in her good hand.
She stopped at the curb and looked up at my floor.
I stepped back from the glass so she wouldn't see me smile.
She knocked, which she'd never done before.
"It's open," I said.
She came in and set the bag on the island.
She looked around my loft.
"I brought bread," she said. "And a bottle. The man at the shop said it was good."
"What did you pay?"
"Eleven dollars."
I laughed so hard I had to hold the counter.
"What?"
"Nothing. It's perfect."
Dot had left a pot on the stove and a note on the pot that said, in capital letters, EAT IT AND BEHAVE.
We ate at the kitchen island with the lamps low, and we did not talk about Rufus.
We talked about the weave.
She asked what I would do with it if I owned it again, and I told her.
She took a pencil and drew my idea on a napkin, and her drawing was better than my idea.
