Chapter 11: Wire
The man in the gray overcoat did not knock.
He rang the bell and waited, and when I opened the door, he took off his gloves one finger at a time.
"Mrs. Boteler. I apologize for coming unannounced. I believe your mother has been telling people I don't exist."
"You're the friend from the club. Kylie told me about you."
"Is that what she calls me?" He smiled. "May I come in?"
I let him into Gran's front room and kept Theo on my shoulder.
Finbar stood in the corner with his camera down, watching the man's hands.
The visitor looked around at the clock, the quilts and the porch swing through the window.
"Charming. Your mother described it as a mansion."
"What do you want?"
"I want what I'm owed." He put the folder on Gran's table and opened it. "Two point three million dollars, lent over six years against an inheritance your mother told me she had."
"She had none."
"I'm discovering that," he said mildly. "She told me a trust of fourteen million was hers by right, and that her daughter was a weak girl who would sign anything. Last week she told me the weak girl was in the hospital, that guardianship of the baby would be filed, and that I would be repaid by the end of the month."
"And you believed her."
"I believed her because I had lent her money for six years, and each time she paid a little. Then each time she paid less."
He turned a page.
"Yesterday I read a news story about a video of a staircase, and I thought, perhaps your mother has been less than honest with me."
