Chapter 18: The Chair
"That's twice," I said. "You don't get a third."
Marguerite pulled against my grip.
She was stronger than she looked, and it didn't matter.
"Let go of me."
"When you step back from my sister."
She stepped back.
I let go.
She stood there in the middle of the parquet with her hand still raised a little.
Roisin touched her cheek once.
Then she sat down at table four and picked up her water glass, and her hand didn't shake at all.
A chair scraped at table five.
The woman who'd called me the janitor stood up.
She folded her napkin, laid it beside her plate, and picked up her purse.
She didn't look at Marguerite.
She walked out.
Then the woman beside her.
Then the whole table.
Then table six.
Three hundred women walked past Marguerite Ellery in the middle of her own luncheon.
Not one of them said goodbye.
By the door, one of them stopped at the donation table.
She picked her own envelope back out of the glass bowl and put it in her purse.
Two more did the same.
She walked back up to the podium and stood behind it with both hands on the wood.
