"Cost me what?" I said.

"Three hundred thousand." Carina said it like she was ordering lunch. "Wired. By Monday."

"That's a lot for a text thread."

"It's a lot of texts."

She scrolled with her thumb so I could see them go by.

"He sent me a picture of the receipt. He thought it was funny."

"And you've had these for a week."

"I've been busy."

"Being cut off," I said.

Her smile went thin.

"Daddy froze my cards after Port Night," she said. "Because of you. So you can pay for it."

"I don't buy things," I said. "And it isn't my window."

I walked around her and opened my truck door.

She stepped in front of it.

"Then I'll go to your sister."

"Go ahead," I said. "She's up at four."

Carina came to Keane's at eight the next morning.

Friday, the busiest hour.

The parish men at the window table, the nurses picking up muffins, a line to the door.

She walked to the front of it in her red coat, and nobody stopped her, because people still don't.

Roisin was boxing a dozen morning buns.

She didn't look up.

"I have something you want," Carina said, loud enough for the line. "About your window."
