Chapter 13: Five Weeks

Willa looked at Jasper.

He read the question in her face and gave a short nod.

"I'll be at the kitchen door," he said. "Shout if you want me."

He walked back up the path. He passed Nolan without a glance, and Nolan did not move to let him by.

Then they were alone under the oak, and the frost was cracking under their shoes.

"One minute," Willa said.

"Not here. Please. The summerhouse."

"Here."

Nolan pushed his wet shirt away from his skin and stood there shivering.

"The night you left," he said. "I was at home, at my parents' house. I had a call from your sister at eight in the morning."

"And?"

"She said you were gone. That you'd taken the early flight and left no note, no message, nothing. That you couldn't face me."

"I left a note."

"Not for me."

"I wrote you a letter, Nolan." Her voice shook and she steadied it. "I gave it to Daphne the night before. She said she would walk it over to your house herself."

"She didn't."

"She told me she did. She told me again on Tuesday, in the kitchen, with her hand on my arm."

"I never saw a letter." His ears had gone dark red. "I called you forty times that morning. Your phone was off. I drove to the airport and stood under the departures board, and the flight had already gone."

"The flight was at six."

"I know that now. I didn't know then." He swallowed. "What did it say?"

She had said it over to herself on a hundred nights. She had never once said it aloud.

"It said that I loved you. It said that if you came to the airport by six, I would stay. And if you didn't, I would go and I wouldn't ask again."
