Chapter 20: Addressed to Him
Willa had her dress down and her hair tied back before the car door opened.
Jasper was tucking in his shirt. He had missed a button, and she fixed it without a word and went out onto the step.
Nolan stood at the gate with his hands in his coat pockets.
He looked at her, and then at Jasper behind her, and then at the chimney.
He said nothing about the shirt.
"I followed you from the clinic," he said. "I'm sorry. I didn't plan to come in."
"Why did you follow us?"
"Because Daphne told me at breakfast that you'd been seeing him for longer than the engagement." His voice was level. "She said she was worried. She asked me to find out where you go."
Jasper's shoulders squared.
"She asked you to follow us," he said.
"She asked me to look after Willa." Nolan's mouth twisted. "I've been doing what she asks for three years. It's a habit."
Willa came down the path and stopped inside the gate.
The sun was low behind the leaning chimney and the lane had gone gold.
"Nolan. I need to tell you something and I need you to listen to the end."
"I will."
"There's a drawer in Daphne's study. The left side of the white desk, second one down. It's locked now, and she keeps the key in her pocket."
"What's in it?"
"An envelope."
She heard Jasper shift behind her and stay silent.
"It's cream, with a flap that's been sealed. It says your name on the front, and under your name it says by hand." She forced herself to go on. "The writing is mine."
