Chapter 22: Armando

My father came down the length of the auction floor with the envelope held up high.

"Excuse me," he said. "Excuse me, gentlemen. A family matter."

Nobody stepped aside.

He had to walk around the crates.

By the time he reached the platform steps, a lot of people had stopped pretending they weren't watching.

"Vasco," he said. "A word."

"Say it here."

"That envelope belongs to my daughter."

"It does," Vasco said.

"She's in no state. She's six months gone, she's been through a great deal, she's not herself." He smiled around at the buyers. "I'm her father. I'll hold the trust for her, and I'll see it's looked after."

"No."

"I beg your pardon?"

"The trustee is my attorney," Vasco said. "The beneficiary is the child. Lidia can't sign it over. You can't sign for her. Nobody can touch a dime of it but the girl, when she's twenty-one."

"I'm her grandfather!"

"You're a man who put his daughter on a plane in cash," I said.

I had come down the steps behind my husband.

I stood on the concrete in front of my father, with my rings on and the whole floor at my back.

"Papa. I want you to stop."

"Ines."

"You've been asking everyone for money for a year. You asked me, you asked him, you asked Avó. You asked me in front of sixty men, and I tore it up," I said.
