Chapter 23: First Snow

The snow kept falling all night, and by three in the morning it had buried the Sooy porch rail.

I lay in my childhood bed with the window gone white and the old quilt over my shoulders.

The bed was narrow, and the headboard still had my sticker of a horse on it from when I was nine.

Reuben lay facing me with his knees bent to fit.

My mother's door was open down the hall, with her lamp off and her snore going steady.

"Door open at night," I whispered. "She has rules."

"She said a door, not a mouth," he said.

"She'll hear."

"Then we'll be quiet."

"I've been loud for a month," I said. "I don't think I know how."

"I'll teach you."

He put his hand flat on my stomach under the quilt.

His palm was warm, and it spread over the soft place where our pup lay, and he held it there.

I covered his hand with mine.

"Hello, in there," he said, very low.

"She can't hear you yet."

"He might."

"We don't know," I said.

"I like not knowing."

I turned my face into his throat and breathed him in, woodsmoke and pine and snow.

His mouth found mine in the dark.

The kiss was small, and soft, and unhurried, with no teeth in it at all.

He kissed my lips, and my chin, and the corner of my jaw, and I felt each one in the soles of my feet.
