Chapter 18: The Pew
On Friday afternoon the Hallam Pavilion held a press walk-through, and Winnie and I went in as guests.
Our names were on the list, which meant my mother had put them there, or Reuben had, to watch my face.
The glass hall on the river had been turned into a chapel.
Twenty dark oak pews stood in two blocks facing a white arch, with a runner of ivory silk between them.
Each pew had a small brass plaque on its end.
Fifteen reporters stood along the glass wall, and two cameras were set up on tripods.
Reuben was at the arch in a charcoal suit, with Gwen in a cream coat beside him and one hand resting on her stomach.
She saw me come in.
Her eyes went to mine and slid away, and I did not make her look.
My mother sat alone in the third pew.
Nobody sat next to her, though the pew was empty on both sides.
The woman with the half-moon glasses sat three rows behind, and the navy suit, and the white-haired man.
