Chapter 11: Her Own Bed
They didn't make it up the stairs without touching.
He pinned her against the wall on the second landing with one forearm braced beside her head.
He kissed her until her knees went.
"Door," she managed.
"Which one?"
"Fourth key. The brass one."
He took the keys out of her fist and got the door open without looking at it.
He walked her backward into the apartment with his mouth on hers.
The lamp in the hall was off.
The bedroom door stood open, and the bed was made with the new sheets she had bought on Thursday morning.
She had flipped the mattress herself.
She had told herself it was for the bad sleep.
Niall stopped at the edge of the bed with his hands on her waist.
His breathing was ragged, and his chest was rising hard against hers.
"Maeve."
"What?"
"Last week you were somebody's wife."
"I was. I'm not now. Do you want me, or do you want me because I'm sad?"
"I want you," he said, and his voice dropped into a rough, steady register. "I wanted you the second you spilled coffee on your wrist and tried to say you were fine."
Something tight in her chest came loose.
"Then stop talking."
She pulled his jacket off his shoulders and let it fall.
He took the hem of her black dress in both hands and drew it up over her head, slowly, and the cool air hit her skin.
He looked at her for a long moment.
"God," he said.
"You're staring."
"I'm allowed. It's my funeral day." His mouth quirked. "Come here."
He laid her down on the new sheets and followed her.
His body was heavy and warm and solid, and she spread her legs under him without being asked.
He kissed down her throat, her collarbone, the swell of her breast above her bra.
