Chapter 19: Carry Her Coffee
Niall had carried his father's belongings around in a brown paper bag since Tuesday, and he had not opened it.
On Saturday morning, parked outside the Ashgrove building with a paperback he wasn't reading, he finally did.
There was a watch with a cracked face, a harbor pilot's pin and a pair of reading glasses.
Under them lay a folded sheet, and Niall's name was on the outside.
The handwriting was neat and round, and it was not his father's.
At the bottom, in a shaking scrawl he knew at once, the old man had signed it himself.
Niall. I'm telling this to the nurse because my hand won't hold a pen. She's writing down every word and she says she won't change any of them.
If you're reading this, you came late. I forgave you at the door, before you walked in. Don't carry it.
The night nurse is called Maeve. She sat with me every night you were gone and never once made me feel it. She tells the truth, and that's rarer than it ought to be.
I'm not telling you to marry her. I'm telling you to carry her coffee.

Niall read it twice.
Then he sat with his forehead against the wheel for a long time.
He did not cry.
He had not cried at the funeral either, and he was starting to understand that it wasn't going to come in a church.
It came instead as a small, raw laugh, because the old man had been right about the coffee.
She had known about this letter for eleven days and had never said a word.
She had looked at him across a bed rail and let him walk in on his own.
When Maeve came out of the building at nine, she was walking fast.
