Chapter 14: The Note

Maxwell's POV

I told Hazel I had a fund call on Sunday, which was true for the first forty minutes of it.

She was at her grandmother's table with a legal pad, working out the votes for the fifth time.

She didn't look up. She put her bare foot against mine under the table for one second and took it away.

I drove to Greenwich with that second still on my ankle.

The club was a low brick building behind a hedge, and the card room was at the back.

I walked there past a hallway of photographs of men holding trophy fish.

The man I wanted sat alone at the corner table with a coffee and a ledger book.

He was sixty or so, in a cardigan, and soft-spoken.

"Mr. Brodie," he said. "I wondered when."

"You know who I am."

"I read the business pages. Sit."

I sat.

"You're the man who has been calling the Heathcote debt your own," I said.

"I'm the man who holds the paper on it," he said. "It's a different thing, and I'm fond of the difference."

"What's left on it?"

"A million two fifty, and the interest since the first of the month. Call it one point four."

I had expected the number to be bigger.

"Hazel's father told her the debt was two and a half million," I said.

"That was the whole debt. Mr. Lyle wired me half of it in April. He called it a gesture of good faith." The man turned a page. "The second half was to come when the girl signed something. I don't know what."
