Chapter 10: Ninety-Nine Point Nine Eight

For a moment the only sound in St. Brendan's was a baby yawning in the front row.

Then Hailey laughed.

It was a high, thin laugh, and nobody joined her.

"That's a fake," she said. "Anyone can make a screen say anything. He's a stranger, and he has a grudge."

"Hailey," Dalton said.

"Dalton, look at him. He walked into our wedding with my sister to hurt us."

"Ninety-nine point nine eight," Hamish said, very evenly. "I can give the lab's number to anyone in this room."

The builders' association murmured.

A man in the third row took out his phone.

Dalton was staring at his new wife, and I watched him do the arithmetic.

"You told me eleven months," he said.

"It's your son."

"You told me you weren't seeing anyone else." His voice was quiet, which was worse. "You cried in my car in March. You said it was mine and you'd never forgive yourself if I walked away."

"It could be yours," Hailey said. "It still could be. The dates..."

"The dates are in this phone," Hamish said. "A text she sent my brother seven months ago. I'm late. I'm scared. Call me."

Hailey's face went the color of her dress.

She turned on me.

"You did this," she said, and for the first time in my life her voice was ugly. "You put him up to it. You've hated me since I was born."

"I held you through thunderstorms," I said.

I took my phone out of my pocket.

"I promised to raise your son while you lay on a bed pretending to die," I said. "I would have, Hailey. But you have to know what else is on my phone."
