Chapter 10: Full Count

I read the text three times.

Caleb lay beside me on the bed, breathing hard, one hand still on my hip.

"What is it?" he said.

I turned the screen so he could see.

He read it and was quiet.

"You're going," he said. It was not a question.

"I have to see."

"Josie." He sat up. "In the last..." He stopped and started again. "She wants you to leave this house tonight. That is the whole reason for that message."

"I know."

"Then why?"

"Because if I don't go and she's actually hurt, I'll never hear the end of it. And if I go and she isn't, then every person in that room sees it."

He thought about it for a long moment.

"Then I'm coming with you."

"Your mother..."

"Will understand. I'll leave her a note."

We drove down the mountain in the dark.

I did not talk, and he did not make me.

Somewhere past midnight he reached over and put his hand on my knee, and left it there.

Mom opened the door before I reached the porch.

Her eyes were swollen, and she was wearing the same nightgown.

"You came," she said, and her voice cracked. "Thank God."

"Where is she?"

"On the couch. She's very weak."

Bianca lay curled on the living room sofa under a blanket, one arm hanging off the side.

An empty orange pill bottle sat on the coffee table.

Dad stood behind her with his hands hanging.

My other aunt was there, and my cousin, and, in the corner chair with her coat still on, Aunt Gwen.

Every pair of eyes turned to me.

"Look at what you did," Mom said. "Your sister nearly died tonight. A girl has a breakdown and you run off with your boyfriend to a hot tub."
