Chapter 23: Dad Moves Out

Josie's POV

My father picked me up at nine on Thursday in a car that smelled like motel soap.

He wore the same grey suit he had worn to my cousin's wedding, and it hung looser now.

"You didn't have to come," he said.

"The judge's clerk asked for family. You're the one who wanted to say it in person."

"I did."

The county building was a squat brick box with a flag out front.

Dad parked and did not get out.

"I signed half the house over last week," he said. "To the young man. For the lease he lost, and the lawyer, and the year of his life."

"Mom let you?"

"Your mother didn't know until the paper came." He rubbed his thumb over the steering wheel. "She called me a coward on the phone for an hour. Then she said it was the first useful thing I'd done."

"Is she right?"

"Probably."

I looked at him, at the gray in the corners of his mouth.

"I'm not going to tell you it's fine," I said.

"I'd think less of you if you did."

"I'm not going to tell you it's not."

"I'd think more of you for that." He tried to smile. "Gwen's husband is teaching me gin rummy. He cheats."

"He does not."

"He has a trick with the discard pile." Dad's voice cracked on a laugh. "Last night he won my cufflinks."
