Chapter 14: The Plane Ride

Cora lowered her hands and her face was dry.

"Talbot has always been easily led," she said, sadly. "Anyone with a camera file can make a pack leader look cruel. I ask the council not to be swayed by theater."

"Council."

It was Rowan.

He had come out of the third row and into the aisle, with his hands out of his pockets.

I had never seen that before.

"I ask leave to testify," he said. "I run the external trade. I have something to say about the night Thea left."

The eldest looked at Cora, and at me, and said, "Speak."

Rowan stopped in front of the bench and kept his eyes on the elders, not on me.

"Five years ago, on the night of the pack dinner, Cora Penrose came to my office at nine. She told me Thea was a danger to herself and the Alpha was too grieved to act. I took Thea from the dinner and drove her to Logan on Route 1 and walked her to the last Los Angeles flight."

He took a breath.

"She cried the whole way. I told her it was for the best."

The hall was silent.

"There's more," he said. "On the way, Cora called me. She said Thea shouldn't have her phone. She said it would only upset her, and that I should take it and keep it until the plane had landed."

I stared at him.

I had arrived in Los Angeles with no phone and no number, and I had told myself for five years that I had been too proud to call.

"I took it," Rowan said. "I said it was a favor. I gave it to Cora that night in the parking lot. She said she'd hold it for you."
