Chapter 20: The Cut Cord

The Alpha stood.

He took his time about it, with one hand on the arm of the chair, and nobody in the hall helped him.

"Cora Penrose," he said. "My sister's daughter."

Her chin came up.

"You drove my son's claimed mate out of this territory with forged letters. You stole from nine widows and the bloodline account. You put poison in my cup. You went to a child's bed with your teeth bared."

His voice was not loud.

"The penalty under our law is exile, and I speak it. You are cut from the pack. You will not be named at a Tidewatch table, and no pack on this coast will take you."

The eldest brought a short braided cord from the bench.

It was grey, the pack's own color, the cord every Tidewatch cub wears at the wrist from the day it is named.

Cora's hung from her cuffed hand.

The Alpha took a knife from the eldest and cut it.

The two halves fell on the stone floor.

Cora looked down at them.

Her mouth worked, and nothing came out.

"My lord," said the eldest, "the council would also hear the claimed mate on the other offenders."

All eyes came to me.

I had not expected to be asked, and I felt the whole hall lean in.

"Talbot Newhall struck me," I said. "He was lied to, and he struck me anyway, and he has knelt in front of the people who saw it. Rowan Keohane put me on a plane. He has put his seal on your bench and he gave you the truth when it cost him."
