Chapter 7: Sunday Dinner
Eleanor's Sunday dinner was set for eight, in the long dining room of the house in Lake Forest.
There were name cards.
Mine was at the far end of the table, beside Calvin's.
Timothy's card sat at the head, and the chair at his right hand held Gwen, already seated, already smiling.
"Rosemary, darling, you're down here," Eleanor said, steering me by the elbow. "Calvin has been so lonely."
Calvin pulled out my chair without meeting my eyes.
I sat.
A maid in a gray apron took Milo's hand and led him off to see the koi pond, with Biscuit under his arm.
"He likes his chicken without the crusts, doesn't he?" Eleanor said to nobody. "I'll have the cook see to it."
I hadn't told her that. Calvin must have.
Timothy took the head of the table last.
He stopped with his hand on the back of his chair and looked down the length of the cloth at me.
"Why are you sitting there?" he said.
The room went quiet.
"The seating is by custom, dear," Eleanor said. "Family on this side. Gwen has always had the chair at your right."
"Gwen is a guest."
"Timothy," Gwen said gently. "It's all right. I don't mind."
"I mind." He pulled out the chair beside his own. "Rosemary. Here."
I didn't move.
Everyone at that table was looking at me.
"Mother," Timothy said, in the same level voice he had used on the judge. "My wife will be in my bed on Thursday, on the doctor's schedule. Until then I would like her where I can reach her."
