Chapter 18: Does It Hurt
The greenhouse smelled of wet dirt and tomato leaves, and the afternoon sun came through the roof panels in long yellow bars.
I had set two overturned buckets in the middle of the aisle.
Teddy sat on one with his book on his knees.
Luke stood behind him with a hand on the back of his shoulder.
I stayed in the doorway, where I could see all three of them.
Shelby came in at four, in jeans and a gray sweatshirt, with her hair loose.
She stopped a few feet from the other bucket and did not sit.
"Hi, Teddy," she said.
"Hi."
"Is it okay if I sit?"
He considered it.
"You can sit on that one," he said. "It's the wobbly one."
She sat, and it wobbled, and she put out a hand to steady herself on the potting bench.
"Your mama asked me to tell you something," she said. "I want to say it in plain words, so I'm going to."
"Okay."
"Last Saturday, you got bitten by a snake, and your mama brought you to my work. You needed a medicine called antivenom, and I was the one who had the key to it."
Teddy nodded.
"I didn't open the cabinet. I kept the key in my pocket. It was forty-two minutes before you got the medicine."
Luke's hand tightened on his shoulder.
"I did it because I was angry at your mama, and I was angry at someone else who wasn't there," Shelby said. "It had nothing to do with you. But you were the one on the bed."
Teddy looked at her very steadily.
"Did you know it was a copperhead?" he said.
"Yes."
"Did you know my arm would turn purple?"
She took a breath.
"Yes. I'm a nurse. I know what a copperhead does."
