Chapter 21: The Nest
Zane held up his phone on a little gimbal so it faced both of us.
A red dot glowed in the corner of the screen.
"Say hi, kiddo," he said. "We're live. Abundance After Dark. Ninety thousand people are watching you come home."
Bring her home.
So proud of you Zane.
I looked past the phone at him.
"I'm not home," I said. "I'm working. You've got pests."
He laughed for the camera.
"She's an exterminator now, folks. Isn't that something? Go ahead, sweetheart. Look around. Nothing to hide here."
He thought I'd stand there and cry.
I walked past him up the white stairs with my drywall saw and my rod and a pickle jar.
He followed with the phone, narrating.
"This is what I've been telling you. She's not well. She thinks she sees things."
I saw the pests in his house, dozens of them, sleek and fat, the best-fed I'd ever met.
They didn't attack me.
And I saw the threads.
Pale as fishing line, coming in through every window in the house from every fan in the world.
