Chapter 13: What Did You Call Her

Beckett opened his mouth.

I got there first.

"He called me pup," I said. "It's a long story, Dorinda. It's ours to tell, and it isn't today."

Dorinda looked at me for a long moment.

Then she looked at her son.

He didn't take his hand out of my hair right away.

When he did, he put it in his pocket, bandage and all.

"Ours," Dorinda repeated.

"Ours," I said.

She set one coffee on my tray table, very carefully.

"That one's yours. It has three sugars. Your father said you'd want three sugars." Her voice wobbled. "He's parking the car. He's been crying in it for an hour, so give him a minute."

"Okay."

"I'm going to go stand in the hall," she said, "and not think about anything at all."

She went.

Beckett and I didn't look at each other.

"Thank you," he said quietly.

"I didn't do it for you."

"I know."

At nine, a detective came in with a paper cup of tea and a notebook she didn't open.

"I hear you made a video," she said.

I pointed at the plastic bag with my dress in it.

She found the phone and watched the whole thing with the sound turned low.

My own voice came out of it, shaking, saying Blaire Coburn's name.

She looked at me over the phone.

"Most people in there just cry, Miss Prewitt."

"I cried after."

"I'm taking a copy. Don't delete the original. Don't post it. Don't talk to her."

"I can do two of those."

That got the first smile out of her.

They let me out on Sunday with four fingers in gauze, and my dad drove me home to Lake Forest with both hands at ten and two.

At the house, I went straight up to the third floor.

I pulled the pink suitcase out of my closet and started folding.
