Chapter 14: The Complaint

The dean's office had too many chairs in it.

The dean sat behind his desk in a green bow tie.

Blaire sat by the window with her legs crossed, her father's lawyer at her elbow in a navy suit.

The photo of me in Beckett's arms was blown up on an easel.

"Miss Prewitt," the dean said. "Sit down. This is an informal hearing."

"It doesn't look informal."

"Miss Coburn alleges a sexual relationship between you and your professor. Is that true?"

Everyone waited.

I could have said no.

It would have been easy, and it would have been a lie, and Blaire would have known it was a lie.

She'd have owned me for the rest of the year.

"That photo," I said, "is a man carrying me out of the freezer she locked me in. The police have the video. You can ask them."

The lawyer cleared his throat. "My client denies any involvement in what was clearly an accident."

"Then she can deny it to the detective."

"Answer the question, Miss Prewitt," the dean said. "Are you sleeping with Professor Lockwood?"

The door opened before I could.

Beckett came in without knocking, in a dark sweater, his hands still taped.

"I'll answer that," he said.

"Professor, this isn't..."

"Yes," Beckett said. "For two years."

The room went silent.

Blaire's lips parted.

She'd wanted this. She just hadn't wanted it handed to her.

"We met in Ohio two years ago, long before I applied here, long before our parents met," Beckett said. "She didn't know who I was. That was her condition, and I kept it. I knew who she was from the third day of this semester."
