Chapter 14: Not a Phone Charger

Four hundred campers stood in the dark, with their phones face down on their seats, and nobody said a word.

I was the only one who could not stand it.

"You can sit," I said. "Honestly, it's fine, I'm used to it."

Nobody sat.

On the stage, Melody's smile had gone stiff at the corners.

"Sit down," Melody said into the podium microphone. "All of you. You don't understand what she does."

Her voice shook, and for once it did not sound like acting.

"She plugs into people," Melody said. "Everybody's a charger to her."

She pointed at the rows.

"She sits next to you and talks until she's full. Then she moves to the next outlet."

"She did it to me for a week," Melody said.

"You've known me for nine days," I said.

"Unplug her!" Melody said to the hall.

Then she reached down behind the podium, found the thick black cable that ran to the audience microphone, and pulled it out of the wall.

My microphone made a long, sad pop and died in my hand.

The hall made a sound like four hundred people saying "oh."

I looked at the dead microphone.

Then I looked at the girl at the end of the front row, who was eighteen and nervous and wore a lanyard that said CAMPER.

"Hi," I said, in my plain voice, with no help. "Can you hear me?"

"Yes," the girl said.

"Great. Can you say that to the row behind you?"

She turned around.

"She says, can you hear her?" the girl said.

"Yes," the row behind her said, and turned around.

It went back through the hall like a wave at a ballgame, each row saying it over their shoulders to the next, until the last row in the dark shouted, "YES."
