Chapter 17: Come Home
My mother put her sunglasses down on the tablecloth, folded, next to her iced tea.
"In," she said. "In what, baby?"
"In whatever pays." I kept my hands folded. "I sat in that boardroom on Monday and watched four million dollars go into an account with my name on it. And I don't get a dime of it. I get the prison part."
She didn't say anything.
She was listening. Head tilted. Patient.
"I've got no apartment, no savings and no shop," I said. "I'm sleeping on a couch over Wabash, next to a guy who mixes paint. I was the crying girl at nine kitchen tables, and I never got paid once."
"And Roarke?"
"Roarke was a week."
"A week with a lot of pictures."
"He's a Gibbons who got cut off. What's he good for now?"
She laughed.
It was a real laugh, low and surprised, the one she never used on men.
"Saying it's cheap," she said. "If you're done with him, you end it where people can see. Not on some fire escape. Somewhere it gets back to me without you telling me."
