Chapter 23: Charlene
I stood in the elevator door and didn't let it close.
"Two hundred dollars," I said.
"In an envelope." The schoolteacher held up two fingers, like he was still counting it. "She came to the door alone a month after you all left. She didn't come in. She cried on the step and gave it to me and drove off."
"Did she say anything?"
"She said she was sorry." He looked at the carpet. "I didn't believe her. I spent it anyway. I had a light bill."
The elevator buzzed at us.
Roarke held the door with his arm.
"Thank you," I said.
"I haven't flown yet," he said.
We landed at O'Hare at nine that night.
Roarke drove me to the end of the Gibbons drive and turned the lights off.
"Let me come in," he said.
"You can't come in."
"I can sit in the mudroom. On the bolt."
I kissed him across the gearshift, once, hard.
"Tomorrow," I said. "I'm going to talk to her."
"About Tulsa."
"About the two hundred dollars."
He held on to my hand a second longer than he needed to.
"Text me when you're done," he said. "Every word. I'll be on the drive."
