Chapter 13: Out
Laurent didn't turn around.
"I swapped his deck the night he lost her," he said. "I let him bet her."
Andre dropped my jacket on the floor.
He crossed the room in three strides and hit Laurent in the face.
It was one punch, short and heavy, and Laurent went back into the glass wall.
He didn't put his hands up.
He touched his mouth with his thumb and looked at the blood on it.
"Again, if you want," he said.
Andre took him by the shirt and pinned him to the window.
"You sat next to me for two years," he said. "You let me think she was his partner."
"You wanted to think it."
"You put her in the pot so you could win her. Same as him."
"Not the same as him." Laurent's voice didn't rise. "Russ never wanted her. He wanted the money she brought in."
"And you wanted her for free."
"Stop it," I said.
Neither of them looked at me.
They stood nose to nose against the Gulf, two grown men breathing hard.
