Chapter 16: The Study

Ned's POV

I opened my father's study at three in the morning with the key I had carried on my ring for fourteen years.

I had used it once, the day after his funeral, to look for his will.

I had found the will, and locked the door, and used the key only once more, that first winter, for the ledger.

I had slept two floors above that room all my life.

I had known what was behind it as a man knows what is under a stone.

It was a small square room, cold as a well.

A rolltop desk stood against the north wall with a wing chair in front of it.

The shade was pulled down over the window.

The room smelled of pipe smoke and bay rum and old paper, and it smelled of him.

I stood in the door with my hand on the frame.

Then I crossed the floor and sat in his chair.

It was too small for me.

My father had been a short, thick man, and I had my mother's height.

In all my years as his son I had never once sat where he sat.

I put my hands flat on the leather of the desk.

"All right," I said aloud.

The ledger lay in the middle drawer, where I had put it the day after the funeral.

It was a long green cloth-bound book with a leather spine.

Every Sorrow Knob Alpha since my great-grandfather had kept one.

They wrote down what the pack owed and what it was owed.
