Chapter 25: The Kitchen Table
The farmhouse was dark when we came in, and cold, and it smelled of coffee and old wood.
Nels lit the lamp over the kitchen table and knelt to feed the stove.
I stood in the doorway in my coat with the shoebox in both arms.
I had not let go of it since Hilda's porch.
"Put it down, Sol," he said, without turning around.
"I might drop it."
"You won't."
I set it on the counter, and I took off my coat and hung it on the hook, beside his.
The stove caught, and orange light came through the grate.
He stood up.
The house was silent around us, and nobody was in it.
No Delores, no flashlight in a loft, no pastor in the doorway.
"The terms," I said, and my voice came out odd. "Nothing in private that we'd be embarrassed to explain to Hilda."
"Hilda told me this morning to take my time."
"She told me to take mine."
"Then we're going to have to explain it to her," Nels said, "in detail."
I laughed, and then I did not, because he had crossed the kitchen.
He took my face in both hands, with the bandaged palm warm against my jaw.
