Chapter 13: The Pilot Station
The harbor pilots' station sat at the end of a gravel road, behind a chain-link fence and a row of parked trucks.
Romy stopped her green pickup at the gate and cut the engine.
"I'll wait here," she said.
"You can come."
"This one is yours." She held out her hand, palm up. "Give me your keys, so I know you'll come back out."
I gave her my keys and walked in with the note in my fist.
Troy was on the dock behind the station, in his navy jacket, coiling a line beside the pilot boat.
He was between ships.
He had the sunburnt neck and the tired shoulders of a man on his second day without sleep.
He saw my face and put the rope down at once.
"You found it," he said.
I held up the lined paper.
"You wrote this on the fourteenth of September."
"I did."
"You mailed it to a stranger with a check."
"She isn't a stranger. She's family." He rubbed the back of his neck. "I wanted to tell you a hundred times."
"Why didn't you?"
"Because you would have said I was imagining it."
I opened my mouth.
I shut it again, because he was right.
"You'd have told me you were happy," he said. "And you'd have meant it, and you'd have been wrong. I thought you needed to see it yourself."
"You decided that for me."
"I did."
"Without asking."
"Yes."
"Troy." My voice cracked and I let it. "I stood in a bridal shop while a stranger pinned me into a dress. I picked flowers. I put your name on a hundred and forty envelopes. You let me do all of it."
