I took him to see my father on Monday, because he asked.
It was not what I expected him to ask.
I had thought he would want me in his house all week, at his table and in his bed.
At breakfast he put down his coffee and said, "I'd like to meet him properly. Without a priest or a lawyer."
"He can't talk," I said.
"I know."
"He won't know what to do with you."
"Neither do you," said Marcello, "and you're managing."
So we walked down the Pier 19 road together in the early heat, with the gulls working the shrimp sheds.
The smell of ice and diesel rose off the water.
The Scalise house sits at the end of the road behind a chain-link fence, a low yellow bungalow with a tin porch roof and a wheelchair ramp.
Carmela's Lincoln was not in the drive.
An aide in blue scrubs let us in and went back to her magazine.
My father was in the front room by the window, as he always is in the morning, with his blanket and his cap and the radio turned low.
He saw me, and half his face lit.
"Hi, Papa," I said.
I kissed his forehead.
He gripped my arm with his good hand, hard, and looked past me.
Marcello stood in the doorway with his hands at his sides.
I had not seen him look unsure before.
"Mr. Scalise," he said.
My father looked at him for a long time.
Then he lifted his good hand and beckoned, slowly, with two fingers.
Marcello crossed the room and crouched beside the chair so that their eyes were level.
