Chapter 16: Shoulder
The Old Natatorium was locked at ten every night, and Luo Bin had a spare key.
Past midnight on Wednesday, Tang was swimming in the dark.
He had the pool to himself, and the only light was the red glow of the exit sign over the shallow end.
He swam freestyle, hard, in long even lengths, with his bad shoulder grinding at the top of every stroke.
It hurt, and he was glad.
Pain was a thing he understood.
The hearing was in three weeks.
Until it was over he was banned from the squad's training and the federation's pool.
In effect he was banned from the only thing he had ever been good at.
Every time he turned at the wall he saw the lab form with the red circle on it.
He had swum sixty lengths, and he was starting a sixty-first, when the overhead lights snapped on.
He stopped in the middle of the lane.
Fu stood at the end of it in a coat over pyjamas, with his glasses crooked and his hair flat on one side.
"Get out," he said.
"I'm nearly done."
"Zhiyuan. Get out of the water."
Tang swam to the wall, hauled himself up on the edge, and sat with his feet in the pool and his chest heaving.
