Chapter 23: Hot Pot for Thirty-One
Lin's Hot Pot had been closed to the public for the night, and the red lanterns over the door were lit.
Inside, five round tables had been pushed together into one long one, with thirty-one places set along it and a pot every two chairs.
The steam rose to the ceiling.
Luo Bin and the other roommate came through the door side by side, bent under Tang's kitbag, towel and thermos.
Between them they carried the silver medal in its velvet box with great ceremony.
"Your things, Captain," said Luo Bin, with a bow.
"Put them on the chair," said Tang. "Gently."
"We have been your servants for two months," said the other roommate, "and I'd like it noted that I've stopped filming."
"You have not."
"I've stopped filming you," said the other roommate. "I'm filming the food."
Aunt Lin had seated everybody herself, with a list.
Coach sat at the head with the professor on his right.
The captain sat opposite Ji Hao.
Ji Hao had brought a quiet, friendly diver from Yuhua Normal with a shy smile and a very large bag of dumplings.
Down the middle of the table sat the swim team.
At the far end, by the kitchen door, where she could see everything, sat the cook.
