Annika's POV
I let him go at dawn.
I stood on the porch in my coat and watched his taillights turn at the end of the street.
Then I went in and made coffee.
I sat at my mother's kitchen table with my hands around the cup and my legs still shaking.
He had said until Sunday.
He had not said what happens Sunday.
I knew the shape of the thing.
A man who is frightened comes to your door at two in the morning and fucks you on a porch swing and leaves.
I had a name for that.
I had been the one who left a hotel room before light because I was afraid.
I called him at noon.
"Terms," I said, when he picked up.
"Annika," he said.
"Listen. You asked for Sunday, and you get it," I said.
"You come to my mother's table at six o'clock, in daylight, and you tell her."
"I will," he said.
"And if you come, you come as what you are. Not my brother. Not a secret."
"If you can't do that, then don't come to my door again."
