Chapter 22: Keys
The bank called Gunnar's loans on Tuesday.
Two customers cancelled their contracts that week, and a third said he would wait and see.
Eighty men were out of a job they had walked off themselves.
On Thursday the old man with the white hair knocked on the door of the room over the bait shop.
"Come to my kitchen," he said to Nils. "The boys want to talk."
I went too.
His kitchen was small and yellow, and thirty men stood in it, shoulder to shoulder, with their caps in their hands.
There was a plate of cookies on the table that nobody had touched.
"We want the yard," the old man said.
Nils looked at him.
"We've talked to the bank," the old man said.
"They'll lend to a crew that owns it, not to one man that fights them."
He turned his cap in his hands.
"We have the money for the equipment and some of the dock. We don't have the share."
"The share," Nils said.
"Your grandfather left you ten percent when you were born. Your father's been voting it."
