Chapter 4: Ten Days

By midnight the caterers had taken the tent and the tables, the lawn was empty, and the house was ours.

I stood in the dark kitchen in my bare feet, still in the green dress, drinking water at the sink.

I had not undressed because I knew where undressing would lead.

I heard him in the doorway.

I did not turn.

"You said I get to hear it out loud," I said to the window.

"I'm breaking it."

"That's not the whole sentence."

"I'm breaking the rule." His voice was rough. "I've been breaking it since the stairs."

I put the glass down.

I turned around and walked at him and shoved him in the chest with both hands.

He hit the refrigerator.

"We never met," I said.

"You stood on that dock and said we never met."

"After the best night of my life, you said it and left me standing in the cold."

"Annika," he said.

"Don't," I said.

I took his shirt in my fists and kissed him, hard, with teeth.

He groaned into my mouth.

His hands came down on my hips and spun me, and my stomach hit the edge of the marble counter.

He pushed me forward over it.

The stone was cold on my forearms.

He gathered the green silk in both fists and shoved it up to my waist.

I felt the air on my bare ass, and then his hand, flat and hard, a single slap that made me gasp.

"That's for the dock," he said.

"Do it again."

He did.

Then his fingers hooked in my underwear and dragged it down to my knees.

I heard his belt, and his zipper, and a low shaky breath.

"Tell me what you want," he said.
