Chapter 12: The Desk the Comic Promised
The last panel of chapter eighty-eight had been drawn in letters as tall as the salaryman.
NEXT WEEK: THE DESK.
Sota printed it on Sunday night at nine, on the good paper, at the section printer on the empty fourteenth floor.
It was quarter-end closing, so the chief had signed for overtime, and the guard had waved them both in.
The lights were off except for one row over the chief's desk.
Chief Takamine sat there in his shirtsleeves, with a pen and a ledger, correcting a column of numbers.
Sota walked up behind him and laid the printed page on the blotter, under his nose.
The chief looked at it.
Nothing moved in his face.
Sota had a clock on the wall to count with. He counted to nine, and the pen in the chief's fingers began to shake.
"Where did you get this?"
"I'm a reader, Chief."
"It's a... piece of fan material."
"It's the last page of chapter eighty-eight." Sota put both palms flat on the desk, on either side of the ledger. "It says next week."
"Ichinose."
"I know it's you, Chief."
The pen stopped.
Sota had imagined this moment in forty different ways, in the shower, on the train, on the toilet lid in the fourth stall.
None of them had been this quiet.
"I knew in the first week," he said. "The night of the coffee. You left the drawer open an inch."
"I closed it."
"You didn't. You never close it. You're a mess."
The chief took off his glasses.
He folded them, put them on the ledger, and put his hand over his eyes.
