Chapter 13: Monday Morning
The chief moved before the beam finished its swing.
He rolled off the desk, dragged Sota down by the wrist, and folded them both into the kneehole under the blotter.
The chair came in after them on its wheels.
Sota sat on the carpet with his trousers around his knees and his back against a drawer.
The chief was bent over him, with his shirt hanging open and his heart slamming against Sota's cheek.
Above them, a pair of dress shoes stopped at the desk.
"Takamine?" said Director Sugimoto.
Sota stopped breathing for the second time in two weeks.
The chief laid one finger across Sota's lips.
It smelled of ink and sex and coffee, and Sota kissed it, because there was nothing else he could do with his mouth.
"Quarter-end," the Director said, to the empty floor. "Diligent."
The beam wandered across the blotter.
It found two coats thrown on the corner of the desk and a lamp lying on its side.
It found a ledger with a brown lake on its cover.
A drop of coffee ran off the edge and landed on the Director's shoe.
"Why is there coffee on a ledger?"
Nobody answered him.
Under the desk, the chief's shoulders began to shake.
Sota put a hand over the man's mouth, and felt the laugh go through his palm.
The Director picked up the printed page from the blotter.
He read it slowly, with the flashlight under his chin.
"Next week. The desk."
The silence went on for a long time.
Then the chief's phone lit up beside the lamp, and the Director bent to look at it.
"Tsuda," he read. "Pick up. Winter Comiket just gave us a table. Tell me you're bringing someone."
Sota bit the heel of the chief's hand to keep from screaming.
"Takamine has a woman," the Director said, in a hushed and wondering voice. "He is thirty."
He set the phone down as gently as an egg.
He folded the printed page into his breast pocket, and the beam swung away.
