Chapter 16: The Necktie
At one in the morning, Sota knelt on the futon in the chief's room with the chief's own tie in his hands.
It was gray silk, narrow, with a faint stripe.
It had been worn to the banquet and loosened at the table by exactly one finger.
Now it hung between Sota's fists.
"Wrists," he said.
The chief sat against the wall in his inn robe with his knees bent and his glasses on the low table.
He looked at the tie, and at Sota, and his face was a calm closed door.
His ears were red to the tips.
"I did not agree to this."
"You agreed in the bath."
"I agreed to be rewritten. I did not agree to a tie."
"It's the same thing, Chief. It's a revision."
The chief's mouth twitched, and then he held out both wrists, crossed.
Sota wound the silk around them twice, snug, and drew it through.
He knotted it behind the chief's back, so that his arms were pulled behind him against the wall.
It was a perfect Windsor.
"That's an excellent knot," the chief said, in a dazed voice.
"You taught me."
"I taught you to tie it on a neck."
"Same principle."
The wall behind them was one thin sliding door.
On the other side of it, in the room called Maple, a Director of Claims was asleep.
You could hear him through the paper.
It was a slow, wet, regular snore, like a ship's engine.
Sota put his lips to the chief's ear.
"One sound," he whispered, "and I stop."
"That's not fair."
"It's procedure."
He opened the chief's robe.
The chest underneath rose and fell fast, and the nipples were already tight.
He took the cap off the red pen.
The chief's eyes went to it.
"No," he said.
"Yes, Chief."
"That is my pen."
"It has a very nice cap."
He set the capped end against the chief's collarbone and drew it down, slowly.
