Chapter 16: Alone

Calvin's POV

Lark held my phone out over my chest in the dark.

"Read it," she said. "Out loud."

I read it.

"He never writes 'u'," I said slowly.

"Never."

"Maybe he's rushed. Maybe he's scared."

"Maybe." She sat up and pulled the sheet over her shoulders. "Call him."

I called my father's number.

It rang four times and went to voicemail. His voice said, "This is Harold Ellingwood. Leave a message," in the flat way he always did.

I hung up and tried again.

Voicemail.

"He said his phone dies," I said. "He's out at the yard, or he's asleep, or he's at the executor's."

"Or someone has his phone."

I sat on the edge of the bed with my elbows on my knees.

My ribs burned. The clock said one fifteen.

"If it's him and I don't go, he signs nothing," I said. "Then she gets one more night to burn what's left."

"And if it's her?"

"Then she's waiting at the lake house."

"Cal."

"I know."

I looked at her over my shoulder.

She had her hair down and her knees drawn up, and she was watching me with the face I had seen in the alley, flat and furious and scared.

"Say what you're thinking," I said.

"I told you. Case talk."

"It's past eleven. You made the rule."

She didn't smile.

"Tomorrow you own a lumber company," she said quietly. "A lake house. A trust fund. A name every person in this county will bow to."

"Maybe."

"A guy like that goes back to people with money. He tells the story at nice dinners about the cop who put him in cuffs." She tried to make it sound light. "I'm not asking for anything. I just want it said out loud so I'm not surprised."
