Chapter 20: The Estate
The closing was held in my father's living room, in front of the fire, at nine in the morning.
It was the same room.
The leather chair was still by the window, and the coffee table was still in the middle of the rug, with a stack of papers where the contracts had been.
Two people from the bank sat on the sofa with a briefcase between them.
A lawyer in a grey suit sat beside them, and he was the representative of the cash buyer.
My father stood with his back to the fireplace and did not look at anyone.
Giles came in behind me and took a position by the bookshelves, where he had stood the first day.
He had a bruise coming up over his left forearm, and a bandage on his knuckles.
I saw my father look at the hand and then look away.
"We can begin when Mrs. Bachelder arrives," said the older banker.
"She's here," I said.
She had come in through the French doors from the garden.
She wore dark glasses and a long coat, and she walked slowly, with a hand against her ribs.
When she took the glasses off, my father made a small sound.
The eye was purple and closed, and the lip was stitched.
"Reese," he said. "My God. What happened to your face?"
"I slipped, Papa."
"Reese."
"I slipped."
Nobody in the room believed her.
Not one person said so.
She sat down on the edge of the sofa with her back straight.
"Let's get this over with," she said. "It's my house as much as anyone's. I've been told to sign the sale."
"You're not signing anything," I said.
She looked at me.
