Chapter 24: Brass Over the Door
The visiting room at the county detention center had eight stools bolted to the floor and a pane of scratched glass between each pair.
I sat down on the one nearest the door.
Giles waited outside in the car, because I had asked him to.
Reese came in a few minutes later in an orange jumpsuit, with her hair pulled into a rough tail and no makeup at all.
For the first time in two lives, she did not look like me.
She looked thinner, and plainer, and older than twenty-six.
She sat down and picked up the phone on her side of the glass, and I picked up mine.
"You came," she said.
"You asked."
"I didn't think you would."
"You said that last time too."
A corner of her mouth lifted, and went down.
"Six years," she said. "They gave me six, for the pit and the tent. My lawyer says I'll do four."
"I know."
"Wayne got three, for the lobby and the garage. He's in the men's block across the yard." She tapped the glass with a fingernail. "He writes every week."
"What does he say?"
"That he's sorry." She laughed once, short and dry. "That he never meant any of it. He signs every letter 'Your husband.'"
I said nothing.
I had nothing to say to that, and she seemed to know it.
"I want to ask you something," she said.
"Ask."
"The notebook. The green one. Where is it?"
"There isn't one."
"You must have written it down."
"I haven't written down one line of it this time, Reese." I held the receiver in both hands. "It's in my head. It's the only place anyone can't take it."
She stared at me through the scratched glass.
