Chapter 14: The Clause
Hester put her keys on the breakfast table at seven in the morning.
There were eleven of them on an iron ring, and they hit the wood hard enough to make the porridge bowls jump.
The packhouse kitchen went quiet.
Rowan's mother stopped stirring.
Half the pack was eating there, because nobody had wanted to eat alone, and every head turned.
"The herb cellar, the dispensary, the birth room, the poison cabinet," Hester said. "Those are the pack's. I'm not fit to hold them."
"Hester," the Beta said. "Sit down."
"I forged the chains," she said. "I mixed that tonic for twelve years and I watched a child get colder and said nothing. I've been the healer here for forty years, and I'm done."
"Who will do it?" someone said.
"My apprentice can do the birth room," Hester said. "But I won't hold the keys."
She turned to me.
I was at the end of the bench with Clara's hand in my left hand and a piece of toast in my right.
"I need Brynn and Clara in the cellar," Hester said. "There's something in the book I haven't shown anyone. After today, I'll answer for all of it."
Clara walked down to the cellar with her cane on one side and me on the other, and we stopped twice so she could breathe.
The record book lay open on the worktable under the lamp, next to a small grey chain in a dish.
My chain.
I didn't touch it.
"Read the margin," Hester said. "Left side, under the Alpha's hand."
I leaned over.
There was a note in the white space, written in brown ink so faded it had gone nearly to tan.
The writing was small and slanted and nothing like my father's.
"Who wrote this?" I said.
