Chapter 15: The Witness

Pippa stopped in the center of the hall and clasped her hands in front of her.

She looked small and tired and very sorry, exactly the way she had looked every time she had ever needed forgiving.

"Tell the houses what you saw," said Rooke.

"I want to say first that I love her," Pippa said, and her voice broke on it. "I've loved her for ten years."

"Of course you have," said Rooke.

"I made mistakes. I told the duke things because I was frightened for her. She wasn't eating. She talked to the coffin."

"Every widow does," said the gray woman, dryly.

"Not like this." Pippa wiped her eye with one knuckle. "Weeks before the terrace, Imogen told me she was hearing something. A voice. Writing in the air. She said her husband was speaking to her."

A hush went through the half circle.

I looked at her, and she did not look at me.

"I thought it was grief," Pippa said. "I begged her to see a doctor. She wouldn't. She only listened to it, and did whatever it said, as if somebody were telling her what to do."

"Somebody did," Rooke said, softly. "The king."
