Chapter 11: Tithe
I got as far as the stairwell before my legs gave out.
I sat down on the stone steps with my belt still crooked and my wrists marked red from the leather.
He had walked me out of the studio without another word.
He had only stopped at the door, kissed my forehead, and said, "Go to dinner."
I had not gone to dinner.
The window opened in front of me, bright as a struck match.
LEVEL 7.
TITHE DETAILS UNLOCKED.
My mouth was dry.
I did not want to look.
I looked.
A panel unfolded, plain white letters on gold.
BOUND SIRE: SEBASTIAN ROOK.
VITALITY: 9 OF 100.
EVERY POINT OF HEIR GROWTH IS DRAWN FROM THE BOUND SIRE.
TITHE PAID TO DATE: 91.
AT ZERO, THE SIRE IS LOST.
I read the last line four times.
Then I read the first.
Nine.
I thought of his hand shaking on the rifle.
The ash in his palm.
The reflection in the mirror, fading like a photograph.
Every level I had climbed, every wall I had cleared, every bullet I had put through the center of the paper, had come out of him.
