Chapter 21: Dress Grey
Poppy dressed me.
She had a lint brush, a boot polish tin, and the expression of a general before a battle.
"Chin up," she said. "Higher. Now stop smiling."
"I'm not smiling."
"You've been smiling since four in the morning, and it's disgusting." She pinned my cadet bars straight. "You look like someone who got properly laid."
"Poppy."
"I'm happy for you." She stood back and sniffed. "Also, I'm so scared I could throw up."
"Me too."
"Good. Then we're both normal."
She hugged me, hard, and shoved me out the door.
Sebastian was waiting at the foot of the tower in full dress grey.
The gold bars were back on his collar.
The Commandant had pinned them herself that morning, with the Council clerk looking on and not daring to object.
