Chapter 9: The Photo
On Monday morning Soo-ah met her at the bottom of the tower with a phone held out.
"They got us," she said.
It was a gossip site, and the photo took up the whole screen.
It showed a balcony at night, taken from far away with a long lens.
The faces were small and grainy, but nobody who knew them could mistake them.
The headline said: "DALBIT'S NEW CEO AND HIS STAR WRITER: A CONFLICT OF INTEREST?"
"It was Friday," Yeo-reum said. "Eleven at night."
"Somebody was on a roof with a camera."
"Somebody who knew exactly where to point it."
Her phone buzzed with a message from the secretary.
"Twelfth floor. The board is waiting for you."
The meeting room at Ryu Content had a long oval table of dark wood and ten chairs.
Five board members sat on one side, all in dark suits, with their hands folded.
Ryu Dong-hwan sat at the far end with his gold pen laid across a notebook.
Director Gong sat beside him, a thin man with a glossy suit and the same pleased look he had worn at the all-hands.
Jin-woo sat in the chair at the head of the table, with Hye-jin on his left.
When Yeo-reum came in, he pulled out the empty chair on his right himself.
His eyes went to her face, and she saw the corner of his mouth tighten.
She sat down.
"Writer Oh," Dong-hwan said, pleasantly, "thank you for coming. We have only one question."
He turned the photo toward her on a tablet.
"A creator on our platform is in a relationship with the owner. Our compliance rules call that a conflict of interest. Director Gong has asked that the licence for Blue Hour be reviewed, and that Writer Oh be placed on suspension until the review is done."
