Chapter 11: Quiet Hands

"Who was that?" I asked.

Auden set the phone on the desk.

"My lawyer. Marcus."

"'Not until she's out of the house.'"

He looked at me without flinching.

"Davis's loan is due the day your trust opens. I can call it in whenever I like, and the minute I do he panics and burns the house down, with you in it. So I told Marcus to wait until you're out."

It made sense.

It sounded exactly right.

I stood with my back against the locked door and my arms crossed.

"Imogen says you called her three weeks ago."

"I did."

"You said you'd read the paper."

"I read it for months." He didn't move from behind the desk. "I read his bank statements. I found a second address in Atlanta. I called his wife to learn if she knew about you, because I didn't want to hand you a card that blew up her life without being sure what was inside it."

"That's a lot of care for a stranger."

"You weren't a stranger on the street."

"What was I?"

He rose from the desk, slowly.

"The best thing I'd seen in a year," he said. "And I hadn't met you yet. I watched you from a car, Lenora, across a street, the day you walked out of that clerk's office. I knew who you were. I didn't know you."
